Suppressing dust on construction sites

Even during one of the wettest summers on record since 1977 dust was a common problem on construction sites of all sizes, these fine dirt particles were washed into drains, streams and rivers restricting channels and lessening flow capacity as well as becoming airborne in the wind. frog environmental has a new dust suppression solution called DH56. DH56 is a liquid that after dilution with water can be applied directly to the ground using a standard spray unit. Each application results in the formation of tight bonds between the fine dust particles to create a more stable surface, reducing disturbance by wind and traffic as well as minimising sediments in surface water run off.

DH56 dust control application

Flagstaff County a district of Alberta, Canada has completed a two-year trial using DH56 to manage dust that would kick up from haul routes and spread across the motorway. The treatment prevented this occurrence, improving road safety. Each DH56 treatment lasted 10-12 weeks and no additional watering was required between applications with the exception of one month where extreme drought was experienced. John Guhle of Flagstaff council commented, “Treatment was easy to apply and offered good value as it significantly reduced the amount of labour, fuel and water. The council strives to reduce carbon emissions and potable water use and this treatment supported these targets.” Additional information on the Flagstaff County project application procedure can be found in our dust control case study.
