Civil Engineering and construction company JN Bentley have embraced a new innovation by using frog environmental Floc Mats to manage the risk of silt pollution on their site at Butterley Reservoir, Yorkshire.
Floc mats were deployed on the spillway, a historic structure in a heritage rich setting, whilst a section of it was being replaced.
The Floc mats were placed downstream of works and were used to mitigate the risk of silt pollution in the local watercourse.
The active ingredient in the Floc Mat, Water Lynx, serves to capture and retain fine sediment in a specially designed natural fibre matrix.
Feedback from the JN Bentley construction site included the following:
- Quick and easy to install
- 100% biodegradable material, used mats were re-used as a backfill, no waste or waste disposal costs
- No on-going maintenance whilst Floc Mats were deployed
- The product is not intrusive, good for deploying on this sensitive site in a heritage rich setting.
Floc mats were left in situ for 6 months. After saturation with silt the old mats were swapped out for fresh mats. It is important to note that mats collect large amounts of sediment and will become heavy if left in place for long periods.
JN Bentley are supporting frog environmental with further product development and testing as part of their commitment to drive innovation in the construction industry.
